Biography

TOPP Data Management Group leader Glenn Strout has a history of tackling complex and challenging projects that involve integrating disparate data sets, people and organizations.

With a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Rhode Island, Strout broadened his experience in oceanographic studies throughout the 80's as a Physical Science technician for NOAA's Marine Fisheries Service in Narragansett, RI. His professional experience and personal interests evolved from studying spider crabs and zooplankton to measuring the oceanographic environment at work in the systems influencing the life histories of these and other organisms.

For nearly a decade, Strout worked as a NOAA oceanographer for fisheries assessments and remote sensing projects. Since 1998, Strout has been a key team member of ambitious projects collecting and archiving data from such assorted sources as fish trawls to chlorophyll measurement from satellites. As a Remote Sensing Analyst and Technical Associate at the University of Massachusetts, Strout participated in marine science and technology projects performing synthesis of oceanographic data products and building effective tools for delivery of the data to end users. Among his accomplishments during these years was the successful planning, setup and installation of an operational high-frequency radar station on Cape Cod.

Strout's education and experience made him a perfect fit for a leadership position within the TOPP Data Management team as it builds the program's "oceanographic toolkit", the product that will eventually offer scientists and other users tools to better understand how animals interact with the ocean environment.
