Biography

Aaron Carlisle has a B.A. from Princeton University in ecology and evolutionary biology and a M.S. in marine science from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML). He was a member of the Ichthyology Lab and Pacific Shark Research Center at MLML as an advisee Dr. Gregor Cailliet and Dr. Rick Starr. While at MLML, he was involved in a wide variety of field and lab based research projects, ranging from projects in benthic and estuarine ecology to the ones examining feeding, reproduction and life history characteristics of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays). His thesis research was on leopard sharks in Elkhorn Slough, a seasonal estuary at the head of Monterey Bay. He used active and passive acoustic tagging techniques to examine patterns of movements and habitat use of leopard sharks in Elkhorn Slough, CA in order to identify important foraging and nursery habitats and better understand the abiotic and biotic factors influencing the distribution of sharks in Elkhorn Slough (i.e. tides, temperature, salinity, oxygen, prey distribution, etc…).

Aaron is currently a Ph.D. student under Dr. Barbara Block at Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University. Using satellite and acoustic tag technology and stable isotope analyses, he is studying movements, habitat use, foraging ecology, and reproduction in pelagic sharks.
